You can also take advantage of the local fishing options, cycle hire, horse riding stables, tennis courts and golf courses that are also within the local area.
Walkers of all ages and abilities can explore the footpaths leading around Camber Castle and the Royal Military Canal. Only a short journey away from Rye is the 5,000 year old submerged forest, which can be seen during low tide.
With delightful cobbled streets and a medieval church, Rye is rich in tales of smugglers and ghosts. There is also a small castle and it is only a few miles from London.
Tenterden and the surrounding areas
Tenterden is widely regarded as one of the most charming towns in the South East. With its unique mix of fascinating history and heritage, traditional shopping, family fun, great country activities and events, it is the ideal place for the whole family to explore.
There is also the Rare Breeds Centre at Woodchurch for something a little unusual and for all the steam train enthusiasts and families, you can see the steam trains, Thomas the Tank weekend displays and Santa Special trains at Tenterden.
Romney Marsh
A 15 minutes drive from the historic town of Rye, you can visit the haunting and magical Romney Marsh. It is famous across the South East for its historical connection to smuggling. The one hundred square miles of marsh is still as mystifying and lonely as it was in the seventeenth century. Originally an area of reeds and water with a few churches it was drained in the 1960s. Today the flat landscape containing fertile soil is protected from the sea by shingle banks and is dotted with Romney sheep or 'Kents'.
